Facts about the Danish language:
- About 6 million people in the world speak Danish, most of them living in Denmark, and in Schleswig-Holstein in Northern Germany, where 50,000 Danes speak it as a minority language at home. Danish is also the official language of the autonomous regions of Greenland and the Faroe Islands. In Iceland – as with English – Icelandic is taught as an obligatory foreign language, though it is possible to substitute it with Swedish or Norwegian instead.
- Modern Danish has a strongly reduced tonality, making it particularly difficult for foreigners to understand and learn.
- Writing system: Latin, an official European Union language.
