Facts about the Norwegian language:
- Norwegian is spoken by 4.6 million people.
- The modern Norwegian language has two major dialects, which are different to the same extent as any other Scandinavian languages, and thus it is a legitimate question whether they should be considered as two independent languages. The two dialects of Norwegian are nynorsk (“New Norwegian”) and bokmål (“book language”). The Nynorsk language is used by 10% of the native speaker population in the country (400,000 people), yet, due to similarities and the common origin, other Norwegians are able to understand them, although with difficulty. As its name suggests, bokmål, the “book language”, is the generally used language, and the majority of written documents is also published in it. However, every parts of the country has its own linguistic peculiarity, the “cleanest” bokmål can mostly be observed around Oslo and Trondheim.
