the Finnish language:
- Number of
speakers: 5,232,000. Finnish living in Finland: 4,713,000. In Sweden, 250,000
speak Finnish, 20,000 of them are indigenous Finns from the north-eastern
boundary, while the rest are immigrants. Swedish is an official language in
Finland, and Finnish is an official minority language in Sweden.
- Being very
close to the Estonian language, the speakers of the two understand one another.
Hungarian is related, and the languages share many words and grammatical rules,
but speakers of the two no longer understand each other.
- There is a relatively
large difference between the literary language used in public affairs, and the
everyday, spoken language, which feeds on the slang and the dialects, being
more casual, informal, and omits certain sounds, especially consonants.
