Facts about the Slovene language:
- Slovene is related most closely to the Slavic languages, including the Serbian and Croatian languages, but differs much more from these than they from each other.
- About two million speak it, predominantly in the home country (Slovenia), as well as in Austria (Carinthia), Italy (the Friuli border areas and in and around Trieste) and in Hungary around Szentgotthard.
- There are two dialectical versions that some say comprises a linguistic standard, one is the East Slovene, or Wendish, language, the other is Resian, used by some of the Italian Slovenian minority.
- Official language of the European Union.
- Writing system: Latin.
