Facts about the Dutch language:
- Dutch is spoken by about 22 million people. It is practically identical to the Flemish spoken in northern Belgium; they are only called differently due to political division. The two together are more accurately referred to as Netherlandish.
- Its closest relative is Afrikaans, also known as Boer Dutch, which originally developed from Dutch. The dialects of the South African settlers’ have significantly differentiated from that of the mother country, and adopted German, French, Frisian, and indigenous elements. Dutch and Afrikaans speakers mutually understand each other.
- Writing system: Latin.
- Outside of the Netherlands, Dutch is an official language in Belgium, Suriname, and Aruba.
