Facts about the Portuguese language:
- More than 210 million people speak Portuguese as a mother tongue, putting it second only to Spanish in number of speakers among Romance languages and 5th-7th overall worldwide.
- Few languages have so many distant countries with whom they can speak in a common tongue: The language’s largest base is Brazil (where half of South America’s population lives) with 184 million; furthermore, there are 17 million in Africa, and 11 million in Portugal, the mother country; and also other countries have an additional 6 million native speakers.
- Portuguese is the primary and official language of Angola, Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It is an official language of East Timor and also in Macao that is under Chinese Authority. It is spoken by many but not an official language in Andorra, Luxembourg, Namibia, and Paraguay. Portuguese Creole is the main language of the Republic of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau's population. However, the official language in those countries is Portuguese.
